Shania Twain Thought She’d ‘Never Sing Again’ After Lyme Disease Diagnosis

Shania Twainthe new documentary Shania Twain: Not just a girlincludes some interesting new information about the country singer’s life.

The film, which airs on netflixexplores Twain’s Lyme disease diagnosis after he was bitten by a tick while horseback riding in 2003.

She admitted that for years afterwards, she struggled with her voice.

Simply put, Twain said, “My voice was never the same again.”

It left her wondering about her future in music, with the 56-year-old admitting in the documentary: “I thought I had lost my voice forever. I thought that was it, [and] I will never sing again.”

The Canadian singer took a break from her singing career in 2005, when she released singles like “Don’t!” and “I Ain’t No Quitter”, and 2011, when she released the single “Today Is Your Day”.

After his 2002 album, At the top!, Twain didn’t release a full album until 2017. Now.

In the documentary, Twain also described the symptoms she had immediately after the tick bite, saying, “My symptoms were pretty scary because before I was diagnosed I was on stage, very dizzy. I was losing balance. I was afraid I was going to fall off the stage.”

She continued, “I had these power cuts of very, very, very milliseconds, but regularly, every minute or every 30 seconds.”

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Symptoms of Lyme disease typically include “fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, heart and the nervous system”.

It was a few weeks before Twain started treatment, and during this time the disease affected the nerves connected to his vocal cords, as confirmed by Twain during an interview on View in 2020.

But it took neurologists about a decade to finally link his voice problems to Lyme disease.

While she notes that her voice has permanently changed due to illness, Twain is still pursuing her love of music, with the release of a compilation album titled Not just a girl (the highlights) accompanying the film.

The album contains a new song titled Not just a girlalongside several of his hit songs in order of appearance in the documentary, with Variety reporting the full tracklist.
