Premature baby weighing 800 grams recovers after heart surgery at KIMS

Hyderabad: Pediatric surgeons at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad adopted a minimally invasive cardiac procedure to save the life of a premature baby weighing 800 grams.

A woman had given birth to premature twins at 26 weeks instead of the usual 37 weeks. While one twin weighed 800 grams, the other twin weighed 900 grams. Within 12 hours of life, one of the 900-gram twins died while the other struggled to survive due to a congenital heart defect, according to a press release.

The surviving twin had PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus), a disease that causes heart failure. Instead of opening the chest with an incision to perform heart surgery, due to the baby’s fragile health condition, the doctors chose the minimally invasive route.

A “Piccolo Occluder” medical device, which is a small self-expanding mesh device, was inserted into one of the veins in the groin without an incision to close the heart defect. After 60 days of surgery, the baby’s weight improved to 1.5 kg and was released, doctors said.

Pediatric cardiologists Dr SudeepVerma, Dr Gouthami and anesthesiologist Dr Nagarajan conducted the procedure while the neonatal team was led by Dr Nandakishore.
