Robert Webb was forced to withdraw from Strictly Come Dancing on medical grounds.

The Peep Show star announced his departure in a statement on Wednesday after seeking medical advice due to recurring symptoms of an illness that could have killed him.

Robert, 49, underwent life-saving surgery two years ago when he discovered he was having a heart murmur after a routine medical exam.

He was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and had to have the operation to prevent him from having a heart attack.

The actor – who admits he treated his body ‘like a dumpster’ – said he had no idea about the disease and just thought he felt tired all the time from his elaborate drinking. alcohol and cigarettes.

He previously told the Sunday Times: “I didn’t realize how sick I was. I had no idea. Alcohol consumption escalated so gradually that I was slowly killing myself.

“It was definitely an addiction in the end, an addiction. I drank a lot of beer, during the day, on my own.”

Robert also confessed that in preparation for his operation he felt so bad that he was “literally walking around trying not to have a heart attack.”

He added, “I think part of my subconscious had to be aware that my heart had to do some really, really weird things to keep the show on the road.”

Things did not go smoothly during the operation in November 2019 either. During the operation, he lost two-thirds of his blood cells.

He recalled how the “touch and go” moment led to a conversation where his cardiologist told the surgeon, “You can’t send him home for five days, he’s not going to last two days.”

Since the ordeal, Robert has quit smoking and alcohol and started limiting his time on social media because he felt “fragile”.

Although he performed well on Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing Weekly Show of the Week alongside his professional dance partner Diane Buswell as Kermit and Miss Piggy, Robert has now had to step down as candidate due to intense training and heart-straining performance regimes.

A statement from Robert said: “I am extremely sorry to have to announce that I am withdrawing from Strictly Come Dancing due to ill health.

Two years ago, I had open heart surgery and although I believed I was fit enough to face Strictly and her demanding schedule, it became apparent that I had bitten a lot more than I could chew. for this stage of my recovery.

“I had started to experience symptoms that led me to request an urgent consultation with my cardiologist, and she felt that it would be better for my health to take a step back from the spectacle.

He continued, “I am proud of the three dances that Dianne Buswell and I managed to perform and I deeply regret that I let it go like this.

I couldn’t have asked for a more talented partner or a more patient teacher, and it is a measure of Dianne’s professionalism and kindness that I have been able to go as far as I have.

And Robert mentioned his comrades with heart problems when leaving the show.

He added: “Thanks also to everyone who voted for us at home. It was always going to be a tough mountain to climb (on the one hand it’s made of glitter so it’s very slippery) and I was particularly touched by the support of cardiac colleagues.
