In particular, people who have end-stage heart problems and who have had heart surgery should get enough bed rest and refrain from heavy work or exercise.

Dr. Vineet Arora, a cardiologist at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, says people with heart conditions or those who have had heart surgery should not join the gym without a doctor’s permission. People whose heart is working at less than 35% efficiency should never enter the gym or they could suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) which is a life threatening condition.

According to Dr. Vineet, people who have had heart surgery should not lift weights or run on a treadmill. Light exercise like brisk walking for 40 minutes and covering about 4 kilometers during this time is a great way to stay healthy and fit.

Dr. Vineeta also suggests that only after getting clearance should a patient in poor health join the gym. Also, your trainer at the gym should know your medical history before preparing an exercise program for you. People with heart problems and healthy people should avoid supplements.

Gym supplements can cause heart scarring. Anyone age 30 or older should be seen by a cardiologist to find out their heart condition. This reduces the risk of cardiac arrests and heart attacks.
