Maya was born on June 1 and 10 days later the couple revealed she had been diagnosed with tricuspid atresia. Wharton explained that the disease is a form of congenital heart disease that “occurs when the tricuspid valve of the heart fails to develop. This valve plays a role in the essential function of the heart, which is to pump blood between the lungs and the body. “.

According to the Mayo Clinic, people with tricuspid atresia cannot get enough oxygen into their bodies; they tend to tire easily and are often out of breath. He is treated with multiple surgeries, which Wharton noted when he mentioned that Maya would have to have two open-heart surgeries, one between 4 and 6 months old and one around 3 or 4 years old.

Selfridge revealed she was around 22 weeks pregnant when Maya was diagnosed with tricuspid atresia.

“Our lives were turned upside down in seconds,” she said, adding that Maya “came into the world doing so much better than expected and with amazing cardiologists we were able to get a stent put in instead of the first open heart operation.”

Maya had her first procedure when she was 6 days old, which Selfridge said made her feel “very helpless to care for my own child”.

Selfridge told her followers: “The first time I really held her was when I was 5 days old. The last 9 days have been a complete rollercoaster for us and the most hard time I’ve had as a mother so far It’s something I’ve wanted to share with everyone because I’ve found myself looking for other good-hearted moms who know the pain that I feel and have found help through other mums.”
